    The operators were required to manually flip the component using a crane in a number of different directions in order to obtain the required dimensions and measure all of the critical features. This was done in order to ensure that the component met all of the specifications. Schleifring searched for an alternate approach that would reduce the length of the process, save time, enhance the quality of the product, and make it easier for its operators to carry out production.

    The industry partners of Schleifring considered a number of different options, some of which included portable measuring arms, laser applications, and bridge-type coordinate measuring machines (CMMs). And despite the fact that laser measuring systems would have provided a higher level of accuracy when compared to portable measuring arms, the high cost of implementing laser applications at the time rendered this alternative unfeasible. As a result, portable measuring arms were the method that was ultimately chosen.

    Because of concerns about worker protection, it was imperative that the machine that was chosen have the capacity to carry out measurements without requiring the component to be moved.

    Assurance Technologies Inc.'s Eric Baumler and Ryan Losacco, both of whom are members of Mitutoyo America Corp.'s sales team, worked together on this project. After conducting investigation and engaging in deliberation, the company came to the conclusion that it should purchase the Mitutoyo Crysta-Apex S2030-16 CMM. The business came to the conclusion that there was no other machine that would be large enough or fast enough to reach required distances, as well as provide the accuracy and repeatability that was required for each part. This was one of the reasons why the company came to this conclusion. This was a substantial benefit to consider.

This has resulted in a reduction of inspection time of up to 58% and the elimination of bottlenecks in the process of final inspection. In addition, operators are not required to manually adjust a product that weighs 800 kilograms, as this requirement has been eliminated. It is possible for operators to carry out complicated measuring processes in a manner that is both safer and simpler, and it is also possible for parts to be fully assembled and tested for critical features in their final form.

    The increased availability of information was an additional benefit that was not anticipated but was very much appreciated by all involved.
