  • What is the difference between the startup battery and the Sealed Deep Cycle Battery?

Generally speaking, there are two different types of lead-acid batteries, start-up, and deep-cycle. If the starter battery is frequently deep-cycled (discharge less than 20%-50% of the maximum capacity), it will usually fail after 30-150 cycles. The same starting battery can be used continuously for thousands of times as long as it is used normally (2%-5% discharge).

Starter batteries are usually designed to start some form of the internal combustion engine (cars, trucks, boats, etc.). In the starting battery, you will find more lead plates, thinner and usually made of lead "sponge" similar to foam sponge. This arrangement means that the plates in solution have a larger surface area than deep-cycle batteries and allow them to absorb more current faster than deep-cycle batteries.

On the other hand, the plates of the Sealed Deep Cycle Battery are much thicker, and they are solid, not a sponge. These thicker plates have a smaller surface area, so the instantaneous power required to start the battery is smaller. They are designed to be repeatedly discharged to 20% of their maximum capacity. Thicker lead plates allow this because they are stronger than their sponge counterparts.

Cold start current (CCA) is an indicator that the battery can provide 30 seconds of current at zero degrees Fahrenheit and will not fall below the specified cut-off voltage (usually 10.5 volts). The starting current of the battery will vary with temperature. The higher the temperature, the more starting current the battery generates.

You can use the Sealed Deep Cycle Battery as the startup battery, provided that you consider the lower CCA of the Sealed Deep Cycle Battery. Based on experience, it is best to increase the battery size by approximately 20% to provide the same amount of starting current from a deep-cycle battery. In addition, the self-discharge rate of sealed batteries is much lower than that of the flooded lead-acid type.
